Deepawali, the Festival of Lights, is approaching, and Singapore is all set to celebrate this magnificent event with fervour and grandeur. Deepawali, also known as Diwali, holds a special place in the hearts of Singapore’s Hindu community and beyond. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Deepawali Light-Up is one of the most eagerly awaited events during Deepawali in Singapore. Initiated back in 1988, the Deepavali Light-Up Ceremony is now marking its impressive 35th year. This cherished tradition beautifully mirrors Singapore’s rich tapestry of cultures and unique identity. The annual Little India Light Up returned with even more vibrancy this year, marking the start of Deepavali celebrations in Singapore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 14, 2024, the streets of Serangoon Road were bathed in dazzling lights, stretching over 2 kilometres. The light-up will continue to brighten the district until November 17, as the community gears up for Deepavali, which falls on October 31 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2024 Little India Light Up carries a special theme centred around family unity covering over 2 kilometres. This theme is beautifully captured through a three-dimensional installation at the two main archways, which feature a joyful family of four, symbolizing the festival’s emphasis on togetherness and harmony. The light-up celebrates the victory of light over darkness\u2014a central message of Deepavali\u2014and highlights the importance of unity within families and the larger community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been incorporated into the decorations for the first time, reflecting a growing focus on sustainability. According to the Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association (LISHA), which organizes the annual event, the use of LEDs helps conserve energy while maintaining the festive spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the stunning light displays, the 2024 Little India Light Up includes 12 fringe activities from September 14 to October 3. These activities, organized by LISHA, range from open-top bus tours to cultural workshops, allowing the public to immerse themselves in the rich heritage behind Deepavali. Adding to the festive outreach, LISHA has collaborated with the Land Transport Authority to introduce Deepavali-themed trains and buses, bringing the celebration beyond the streets of Little India. In partnership with the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), LISHA is also raising funds to support the needy during this festive period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Little India light-up is one of Singapore’s most cherished cultural events. It invites locals and tourists to celebrate Deepavali\u2019s enduring message of light, unity, and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
